James S. Gorman
James Sedgwick Gorman (born December 28, 1850 in Chelsea , Washtenaw County , Michigan , † May 27, 1923 in Detroit , Michigan) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1895 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .
Career
James Gorman attended public schools in his home country including the Union School of Chelsea . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and his admission as a lawyer in 1876, he began to work in Jackson in his new profession. He then served as an assistant district attorney in Jackson County for two years . In 1879 he moved to Dexter , Washtenaw County.
Politically, Gorman was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1880 he was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives; from 1886 to 1888 he was a member of the State Senate . In the congressional election of 1890 Gorman was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Edward P. Allen on March 4, 1891 . After a re-election in 1892, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1895 .
In 1894, James Gorman renounced another congressional candidacy. In the years that followed, he worked in agriculture and as a lawyer near Chelsea. He died in Detroit on May 27, 1923 and was buried in Chelsea.
