Robert William Davis (born July 31, 1932 in Marquette , Michigan , †  October 16, 2009 in Arlington , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1979 and 1993 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After elementary school, Robert Davis attended La Salle High School until 1950 and then studied at Northern Michigan University until 1952 and at Wayne State University until 1954 . In the years that followed, he served as the director of the Davis Funeral Home funeral home in St. Ignace . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1964 to 1966 he was a parish councilor in St. Ignace; from 1966 to 1970 he was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives . Between 1970 and 1978 Davis was a member of the State Senate . There he headed the Republican faction. From 1966 to 1978 he was a delegate to the regional party conventions in Michigan.

In the 1978 congressional election , Davis was elected to the eleventh constituency of Michigan in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Philip Ruppe on January 3, 1979 . After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . The 27th amendment to the constitution was passed there in 1992 . In the same year Davis was embroiled in a banking scandal with the congressional bank by writing out many bad checks. But it wasn't illegal at the time because Congress tolerated the practice.

In 1992 Davis renounced another candidacy. He then worked as a lobbyist for K&L Gates . He supported George W. Bush's presidential campaign in 2000 and was a friend of Dick Cheney . Robert Davis died of heart and kidney failure on October 16, 2009 in an Arlington hospice.
