Marvin L. Esch
Marvin Leonel Esch (born August 4, 1927 in Flinton , Cambria County , Pennsylvania , † June 19, 2010 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1967 and 1977 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Marvin Esch visited on the second chance Schools in Akron ( Ohio ) and Jackson (Michigan). During the Second World War he served first in the US Navy and then until 1946 in the US Army . By 1959 he studied various subjects at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He later taught public speaking and labor law at Wayne State University in Detroit .
Politically, Esch was a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives in 1965 and 1966 . In the 1966 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Weston E. Vivian on January 3, 1967 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1977 . During this time the Vietnam War ended . In 1974, political America was shaken by the Watergate affair . In 1971 the 26th Amendment to the Constitution was passed in Congress .
Esch was a member of the Education and Working Committee. In 1976 he decided not to run for the US House of Representatives again. Instead, he applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate : he was defeated by the Democrat Donald W. Riegle . Between 1977 and 1980 he was the director of public relations for the US Steel Corporation . He was then director of continuing education at the American Enterprise Institute from 1981 to 1987 . Marvin Esch died on June 19, 2010 in Ann Arbor. He was married to Olga Jurich, with whom he had three children.
