Clare Hoffman
Clare Eugene Hoffman (born September 10, 1875 in Vicksburg , Union County , Pennsylvania , † November 3, 1967 in Allegan , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1935 and 1963 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Clare Hoffman attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree at Northwestern University in Evanston ( Illinois ) and his admission as a lawyer in 1896, he began to work in Allegan in his new profession. Between 1904 and 1910, Hoffman was a prosecutor in Allegan County . Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party .
In the congressional election of 1934 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Democrat George Ernest Foulkes on January 3, 1935 . After 13 re-elections he was able to complete a total of 14 consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 1963 . It was there that further New Deal laws were passed by the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt by 1941 . Since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the work of Congress has been shaped by the events of World War II . After the war, Hoffman saw the onset of the Cold War , the Korean War, and the civil rights movement as a congressman . The 22nd and 23rd amendments to the constitution were passed in 1951 and 1961, respectively .
Between 1947 and 1949 Hoffman was chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Executive Departments . From 1953 to 1955 he chaired the Committee on Government Operations . Hoffman was considered very conservative. He found it difficult to work with other congressmen from any party. Politically, he was extremely right-wing and showed anti-Semitic tendencies. He opposed the introduction of a polio vaccination requirement and believed that the American health system had been infiltrated by communist agents.
In 1962, Clare Hoffman declined to run again for Congress. After leaving the US House of Representatives, he retired, which he spent in Allegan. He died there on November 3rd, 1967 at the age of 92.
