Barbara-Rose Collins
Barbara-Rose Collins (born April 13, 1939 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American politician . Between 1991 and 1997 she represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Barbara Collins attended her homeland public schools and then Wayne State University . She later began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1971 and 1973 she served on the Detroit area's first school board. From 1975 to 1981 she was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives ; between 1982 and 1991 she was a member of the Detroit City Council.
In 1988, Collins ran unsuccessfully for Congress . In the 1990 congressional elections , however, she was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th constituency of Michigan , where she succeeded George W. Crockett on January 3, 1991 . After two re-elections, she was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 1997 . Since 1993 she has represented the 15th district as the successor to William D. Ford ; the constituencies were swapped that year. In 1996, Barbara Collins was not nominated for re-election by her party.
Since 2002 she has been a member of the Detroit City Council again.
