Ezra C. Carleton

Ezra Child Carleton (born September 6, 1838 in St. Clair , St. Clair County , Michigan , †  July 24, 1911 in Port Huron , Michigan) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1887 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ezra Carleton attended public schools in his homeland and then Port Huron High School until 1859 . He then worked in the hardware store in Port Huron . He also began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1881 and 1882 he was mayor of Port Huron.

In the congressional election of 1882 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded John Tyler Rich on March 4, 1883 . After a re-election in 1884, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1887 . After leaving the US House of Representatives, Carleton resumed his previous work in the hardware trade. In 1894 he ran unsuccessfully to return to Congress. He died on July 24, 1911 in Port Huron, where he was also buried.
