Nick H. Smith (born November 5, 1934 in Addison , Hillsdale County , Michigan ) is an American politician . Between 1993 and 2005 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Nick Smith attended Michigan State University in East Lansing until 1957 . He then continued his education at the University of Delaware in Newark until 1959 . Between 1959 and 1961 he was a soldier in the US Air Force . He also runs a dairy farm in Addison to this day. Politically, Smith became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1962 and 1968 he was a member of the Somerset Township council ; from 1966 he was also mayor there. At the same time he was a member of the Hillsdale County county council. From 1972 to 1974 he worked for the US Department of Agriculture . At that time he was also chairman of the Michigan Agricultural Stabilization and Support Agency. In 1973, Smith attended a meeting in Washington, DC as a delegate to address global hunger problems.

Between 1978 and 1982, Smith was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives ; from 1983 to 1993 he was a member of the State Senate . In the 1992 congressional election he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington in the seventh constituency of Michigan, where he succeeded Dale E. Kildee on January 3, 1993 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2005 . There his voting behavior was relatively conservative.

In 2004, Nick Smith decided not to run again. At the time, he recommended that his son Brad be nominated as a candidate for his successor. He was advised by some party leaders in Congress to vote for a health law. In return, his son's election campaign would have received financial support. Smith turned it down and his son lost the primary. The Ethics Committee later reprimanded this behavior by some Michigan MPs.
