Political career

Advance to senior member of Congress

As of January 2003, McCotter was a representative for the 11th Congressional Constituency  of Michigan in the US House of Representatives, a district in which the auto industry is of great importance. He was active on the Committee on Financial Services and its sub-committees for Capital Markets, Insurance, and Government-Sponsored Enterprises and Housing and Community Opportunity . In November 2006, his colleagues elected him chairman of the Republican House Policy Committee .

From 2005 onwards, McCotter was guitarist for the country rock band Second Amendments , whose members are all members of the House of Representatives. During business trips abroad, the band performed in the evenings to show their support for the US soldiers stationed there. There were gigs in Iraq , Afghanistan , Kuwait , Pakistan and Ramstein Air Base in Germany. There have also been appearances in the United States, for example at Farm Aid and at the Congress Picnic in the White House garden .

In the run-up to Obama's Berlin campaign speech in 2008, McCotter wrote in an opinion piece for Die Welt : "Obama is a populist and his politics are chaotic".

Forgery of signatures and resignation

McCotter applied for the office of US president in the 2011 Republican Party primary , but withdrew his candidacy after a few months. He then decided to reapply for his previous seat in the House of Representatives in the 2012 election , and submitted his application to the Republican area code for that congressional seat. However, it was proven that his employees had forged signatures on his support lists on a large scale, which is why McCotter resigned from his mandate in July 2012. In the course of the public prosecutor's investigation it became known that McCotters employees had already committed crude forgeries in the previous elections since 2006. In April 2013, it became known that McCotter had filed a lawsuit against his former employees for these falsifications, accusing them of targeted sabotage.
