Allen Potter

Allen Potter (born October 2, 1818 in Galway , Saratoga County , New York , †  May 8, 1885 in Kalamazoo , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Allen Potter attended public schools in his home country. In 1830 he came to Adrian in the Michigan Territory . In 1838 he moved to Jonesville in the now established state of Michigan, where he completed an apprenticeship as a plumber . After another move, he came to Kalamazoo in 1845, where he worked in the hardware trade until 1858 . Then he went into the banking industry. At the same time he began a political career.

In 1857, Potter was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. Between 1859 and 1872 he was a member and chairman of the Kalamazoo municipal council several times. From 1867 to 1871 he sat on the local education committee; in 1869 he became its chairman. In 1872 Potter was also a member of his hometown drinking water committee. In 1872 he ran unsuccessfully as a Liberal Republican for the US House of Representatives. He then joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1874 Potter was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Republican Julius C. Burrows on March 4, 1875 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1876, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1877 . After retiring from the US House of Representatives, Potter returned to banking. He also made financial contributions to the railroad business and mining in Colorado . Between 1880 and 1883 he was a member of the sewage commission in Kalamazoo; in 1884 he became mayor of that city. He was also a treasurer of the Michigan State Mental Hospital. Allen Potter died on May 8, 1885 in Kalamazoo, where he was also buried.
