Henry M. Youmans

Henry Melville Youmans (born May 15, 1832 in Otego , Otsego County , New York , †  July 8, 1920 in Saginaw , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Youmans attended the public schools in his home country and then worked for the York & Erie Railroad for ten years . In 1862 he moved to East Saginaw, Michigan, where he worked in the timber and salt industry between 1863 and 1878. He then lived in St. Clair from 1878 to 1884 , where he continued to work in the wood industry, but also in agriculture. He then returned to East Saginaw. There he was mayor in 1886 and 1887. He was also elected to the local council four times.

Politically, Youmans was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1890 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Aaron T. Bliss on March 4, 1891 . Since he was defeated by the Republican William S. Linton in 1892 , he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1893 . During this time he was chairman of the Committee to Control Government Real Estate Spending.

Youmans served in the Michigan Senate in 1896 and 1897 . He also worked in agriculture in Bridgeport . He died on July 8, 1920 in Saginaw.
