Harold Martin Ryan (born February 6, 1911 in Detroit , Michigan , †  March 8, 2007 there ) was an American politician . Between 1962 and 1965 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Harold Ryan attended St. Joseph's High School until 1929 and then the Ferris Institute in Big Rapids until 1930 . He then studied until 1932 at Michigan State College in East Lansing . After studying law at the University of Detroit and being admitted to the bar in 1935, he began working in his new profession. He served as Assistant Attorney General in Wayne County in 1945 and 1946 .

Politically, Ryan was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1948 and 1962 he was a member of the Michigan Senate . From 1956 he headed the Democratic Group there. From 1940 to 1970, Ryan was a delegate to all Michigan regional Democratic party conventions. In 1956, 1960 and 1964 he also took part in the respective Democratic National Conventions .

After the death of the House of Representatives Louis C. Rabaut , Ryan was elected to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the due by-election for the 14th seat of Michigan , where he took up his new mandate on February 13, 1962. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1965 . During this time the Vietnam War began . Domestically, the civil rights movement was in the foreground of the action. In 1964, Ryan was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

Between 1976 and 1985 he served as a district judge in Wayne County. He then continued to work as a visiting judge in Michigan. Harold Ryan died in Detroit on March 8, 2007.
