Henry W. Lord

Henry William Lord (born March 8, 1821 in Northampton , Massachusetts , †  January 25, 1891 in Butte , Montana ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After elementary school, Henry Lord studied law; but later he did not work as a lawyer. From 1839 he lived in Detroit ; four years later he moved to Pontiac . There he worked in agriculture and in trade. After a few years he returned to Detroit. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1861 and 1867 he was the American consul in Manchester ( England ). Upon his return to Michigan, Lord served on the State Board of Corrections and Charities from 1871 to 1882 .

In the congressional election of 1880 , Lord was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded John Stoughton Newberry on March 4, 1881 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat William C. Maybury in the elections of 1882 , he was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1883 .

After retiring from the House of Representatives Henry Lord of was US President Chester A. Arthur to the registration officials in United States Land Office in Creelsburg ( North Dakota appointed). He held this position until April 18, 1888. Lord died in a railroad accident on January 25, 1891 near Butte and was buried in Detroit.
