John Dingell

John David Dingell Jr. (* 8. July 1926 in Colorado Springs , Colorado ; † 7. February 2019 in Dearborn , Michigan ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1955 to 2015 , where he last represented Michigan's twelfth congressional constituency .

Life

Dingell studied at Georgetown University in Washington , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1949 and his Juris Doctor in 1952 at the university's law school .

He was married to Debbie Dingell (* 1953), who succeeded him in the US House of Representatives in 2015.

Political career

In 1955 he was elected to Congress in a by- election. The by-election was made necessary by the death of his father, MP John D. Dingell . When he took office, he was the youngest MP in the House of Representatives ( Baby of the House ) at the age of 29 . Dingell was able to defend his mandate in all subsequent elections and was thus from December 13, 1955 to January 3, 2015 member of the House of Representatives, where he represented the 15th, 16th and finally the twelfth district of Michigan. From 1995 he was - as the longest uninterrupted current member of the House of Representatives - Dean of the House ; John Conyers, also from Michigan, succeeded him in this role . Dingell was a member of the House of Representatives longer than any other member in the history of this Chamber of Parliament. From 1981 to 1995 and from 2007 to 2008 he was Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce .

In 2014 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom .
