James Harvey (born July 4, 1922 in Iron Mountain , Michigan - † July 20, 2019 in Naples , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1961 and 1974 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Harvey enrolled at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1940 . In 1942 he interrupted his studies to serve in the US Army Air Corps for the next three years during World War II . After completing a law degree at the University of Michigan and being admitted to the bar in 1949, he began working in his new profession in Saginaw . Between 1949 and 1953 he was the city's deputy attorney. He was also a member of the local council and from 1955 to 1957 in the county council of Saginaw County . From 1957 to 1959 he was mayor of Saginaw. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party .

In the 1960 congressional elections , Harvey was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Alvin Morell Bentley on January 3, 1961 . After six re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on January 31, 1974 . This time was determined by the events of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement .

James Harvey's resignation came after President Richard Nixon made him a judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He held this office until 1984. From 1984 to 2002 he was still a senior district judge in the federal district judge. He spent his life in Naples ( Florida ), where he died in July 2019 shortly after his 97th birthday.
