George W. Webber

George Washington Webber (born November 25, 1825 in Newbury , Vermont , †  January 15, 1900 in Ionia , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Webber attended public schools in his home country. In 1852 he moved to Manistee County , Michigan, where he worked in agriculture, lumbering, crafts, and trading. In 1858 he moved to Ionia, where he was also active in the wood industry and in trade. In 1870 Webber also got into banking. He was President of the Second National Bank of Ionia from 1872 until almost his death . He also embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1874 and 1875 he served as Mayor of Ionia.

In the 1880 congressional election , Webber was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded John W. Stone on March 4, 1881 . Since he refused to run again in 1882, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1883 . After leaving the House of Representatives, Webber resumed his previous activities. He died on January 15, 1900 in Ionia, where he was buried.
