Isaac E. Crary

Isaac Edwin Crary (born October 2, 1804 in Preston , New London County , Connecticut , †  May 8, 1854 in Marshall , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1841 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Isacc Crary attended public schools in his home country and then graduated from Trinity College , Hartford, first grade in 1827 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession from 1833 in Marshall in what was then the Michigan Territory . Politically, Crary was a supporter of US President Andrew Jackson , whose Democratic Party he joined.

In 1835, Crary was a delegate to the Michigan Constituent Assembly. After Michigan's accession to the Union, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the first and then only constituency of the new state , where he took up his new mandate on January 26, 1837. After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1841 .

Between 1837 and 1844 he was also a board member of the University of Michigan . Isaac Crary is considered to be the founder of the Michigan's school system. Between 1850 and 1852 he was a member of his state's education committee. Crary was also the editor of the Marshall Expounder newspaper. From 1842 to 1846 he was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives , of which he was president in 1846. He died in Marshall on May 8, 1854.
