William P. "Bill" Huizenga (born January 31, 1969 in Zeeland , Ottawa County , Michigan ) is an American politician . Since 2011 he has represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bill Huizenga attended Holland Christian High School until 1987 and then studied at Calvin College in Grand Rapids until 1991 . He then worked in the real estate industry until 1996. Between 1996 and 2002 he served on the staff of Congressman Pete Hoekstra . Like him, Huizenga is a member of the Republican Party .

Between 2003 and 2008, Huizenga served as an MP in the Michigan House of Representatives . In the 2010 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Hoekstra on January 3, 2011. He had not run because he - ultimately unsuccessfully - had tried to nominate his party for the gubernatorial elections in Michigan, which instead went to Rick Snyder . Huizenga prevailed in the primary of his party against State Senator Jay Riemersma and later in the actual election with 64 percent of the vote against the Democrat Fred Johnson. After three re-elections so far in 2012, 2014 and 2016, he can continue to exercise his office today. His new legislative period runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018. In Congress, he is or was a member of the Finance Committee and three of its sub-committees.

Bill Huizenga has five children with his wife Natalie and lives privately in his native Zeeland. He is a co-owner of Jenison- based Huizenga Gravel Company .
