Richard D. "Rick" Snyder (* 19 August 1958 in Battle Creek , Michigan ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He was governor of the state of Michigan from January 1, 2011 to January 1, 2019 .

Life

After finishing school, Snyder studied economics and law at the University of Michigan . After completing his studies, he worked for the consulting firm Coopers & Lybrand in Detroit from 1982 to 1991 . In 1991 he moved to the Gateway company and became its president in January 1996. In August 1997 he left Gateway and founded the investment company Avalon Investments together with Gateway founder Ted Waitt . From 1997 to 2000 he was President of Avalon Investments . Snyder was a co-founder of investment firm Ardesta LLC in 2000 . Again Snyder changed from 2000 to the board of directors of Gateway, which he was a member until 2007, when Gateway was sold to the Taiwanese company Acer . He is also on the board of directors at the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan.

Snyder is a member of the Republican Party . On November 2, 2010, he won the Michigan gubernatorial election . He succeeded the Democratic Governor Jennifer Granholm in office on January 1, 2011 . A controversial right to work law was introduced during his reign in 2013 .

During his term of office, the "Flint water crisis" falls. The inhabitants of the city of Flint were exposed to poisonous, lead-containing drinking water because, due to his decisive political action, a newly built shorter water pipe transported the water from the polluted and heavy metal-containing Flintriver and not from the Huron Sea to Flint as before. When the local General Motors works subsequently got corrosion problems, a new water pipe to the Huron Lake was built just for them.

In the 2014 gubernatorial elections , he was confirmed in office against Mike Schauer with 51 against 46 percent of the vote. After the 2018 election, in which he could no longer stand, he was replaced on January 1, 2019 by the Democrat Gretchen Whitmer .

Rick Snyder is married and has three children. He lives with his family in Ann Arbor , Michigan.
