John S. Horner

John Scott Horner (born December 5, 1802 in Warrenton , Fauquier County , Virginia , †  February 3, 1883 in Ripon , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . He was governor of the Michigan Territory in 1835 and 1836 .

Career

John Horner attended Pennsylvania's Washington College until 1819 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. His party affiliation is not recorded. But since he was appointed by President Andrew Jackson in 1835 to the administration of the Michigan Territory, this suggests a membership in his Democratic Party . In 1835 Horner was first secretary and then the last territorial governor. He held this office until 1836. Then the state of Michigan was established and the territory dissolved. Horner was involved in ending the Toledo War with the state of Ohio .

From 1836 to 1837, John Horner was Secretary in the Wisconsin Territory . He then acted as head of the land registry in Green Bay . In 1846 he moved to Green Lake , Wisconsin, where he ran a farm and served as a probate judge. In 1849 he was one of the founders of the city of Ripon, where he settled. From there he controlled various companies in which he was now involved. He also died in this city on February 3, 1883.
