James Wright Gordon
James Wright Gordon (born around 1809 in Plainfield , Connecticut , † December 1853 in Pernambuco , Brazil ) was an American politician and from 1841 to 1842 the 3rd governor of Michigan .
Early years
The exact dates of birth and death of Gordon are unknown. The sources assume 1809 as the year of his birth. Gordon graduated from Harvard University . After studying law in New York, he began working as a lawyer in Marshall, Michigan.
Political career
In 1839, Gordon was elected to the Michigan Senate as a Whigs member . In the gubernatorial elections of 1839 he was elected as his party's candidate for the new lieutenant governor and after the resignation of incumbent governor William Woodbridge on February 23, 1841, he had to take over the office of governor. His task was to end his predecessor's term of office, which ran until January 3, 1842. In those eleven months he was unable to send any political signals.
Another résumé
Between 1850 and 1853, Gordon was the American consul in Pernambuco, Brazil. There he was killed in December 1853 by falling from a balcony. Nothing is known about his family status. James Gordon was buried in Brazil.
