George W. Welsh

George W. Welsh (born March 27, 1883 in Glasgow , Scotland , †  June 29, 1974 in Ada , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1925 and 1927 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Michigan.

Career

In 1891, George Welsh came to Grand Rapids , Michigan with his parents , where he later worked in the newspaper business and worked for various newspapers and magazines. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1917 and 1924 he sat as a member of the House of Representatives from Michigan , whose president he was since 1923 as the successor to Fred L. Warner . In June 1924 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland , on which US President Calvin Coolidge was nominated for re-election.

In 1924 Welsh was elected lieutenant governor of Michigan alongside Alex Groesbeck . He held this office between 1925 and 1927. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In 1926 he failed in his party's primary elections while trying to be re-elected. In 1928 and 1932 he ran unsuccessfully in the Republican gubernatorial elections. Welsh was Mayor of Grand Rapids between 1938 and 1949. In 1952 he failed again in his party's primary elections for the office of lieutenant governor. He died on June 29, 1974 in the village of Ada, Kent County .
