Alfred Milnes

Alfred Milnes (born May 28, 1844 in Bradford , England , †  January 15, 1916 in Coldwater , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1897 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives ; previously he was its lieutenant governor .

Career

The from Yorkshire originating Alfred Milnes came in 1854 with his parents to the United States, where the family first in Springville ( Utah ) and later in Newton ( Iowa settled). In 1860 they moved to Coldwater, Michigan. Milnes attended public schools in these locations and in Salt Lake City . During the Civil War he was a soldier in a Michigan infantry unit .

After the war he returned to Coldwater, where he worked in trade. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Milnes served on Coldwater City Council in 1876 and 1877; from 1885 to 1886 he was mayor of this city. Milnes was a member of the Michigan Senate between 1888 and 1890 . In 1894 he was elected lieutenant governor of his state. So he was the representative of Governor John Tyler Rich .

After the resignation of Congressman Julius C. Burrows , who moved to the US Senate , Alfred Milnes was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the due by-election for the third seat of Michigan . December 1895 took up his new mandate. Since he in the regular congressional elections of 1896 the Democrats Albert M. Todd defeated, he could only partially used parliamentary term of his predecessor in until March 3, 1897 Congress quit.

Between 1898 and 1902 Milnes was a postman in Coldwater. In 1907 and 1908 he was a member of a convention to revise the Michigan constitution. He also worked in the insurance industry and in the real estate business. He died in Coldwater on January 15, 1916. Alfred Milnes was married to Lucina E. Hull, with whom he had three children.
