John D. Cherry

John D. Cherry (born May 5, 1951 in Sulfur Springs , Hopkins County , Texas ) is an American politician . Between 2003 and 2011 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Michigan .

Career

John Cherry was born in Texas and grew up in Montrose, Michigan. In 1969 he graduated from Hill-McCloy High School there . He then studied political science until 1973 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor . Eleven years later he was still studying administration at the Flint campus of that university . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . He was initially political director of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFL-CIO). Between 1983 and 1986 he was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives ; from 1987 to 1998 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1992 he ran unsuccessfully in his party's primary election for the United States House of Representatives . In 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008 he took part as a delegate at the respective Democratic National Conventions . In the presidential election of 2000 he was the Democratic elector for the defeated candidate Al Gore .

In 2002, Cherry was elected Lieutenant Governor of Michigan alongside Jennifer Granholm . He held this office between 2003 and 2011. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In 2006 he was elected chairman of the National Lieutenant Governors' Association . In 2008 he became a member of the Democratic National Committee . In the gubernatorial elections of 2010, Cherry originally intended to run, but he did not maintain it for financial reasons.
