Garlin Gilchrist II (* 25. September 1982 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party , and since January 1, 2019 Lieutenant Governor of Michigan.

Life

Gilchrist grew up in Detroit and earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and engineering from the University of Michigan . After graduating, he lived for a while in Redmond , Washington State , where he worked for Microsoft and was involved in the development of SharePoint , among other things . After that he worked for MoveOn.org in Washington, DC for a while. In July 2014, Gilchrist returned to his hometown of Detroit and served as Chief Information Officer for Mayor Mike Duggan . He was also politically active in the Democratic Party and ran unsuccessfully for a seat on Detroit City Council in 2017 .

In August 2018, the Democratic candidate for governor Gretchen Whitmer offered him to run as her running mate for the office of lieutenant governor. Gilchrist accepted the offer while he was criticized by the Republican side for not having sufficient experience in high political electoral offices. In the election on November 6, 2018 , Whitmer and Gilchrist won by around ten percentage points. On January 1, 2019, he was sworn in as the new lieutenant governor . This makes Gilchrist the first African American to hold this office. Since then, he has served as Vice-Governor Whitmer and, by virtue of his office, is also President of the Michigan Senate . There he only has the right to vote in the event of a stalemate, since he is not a state senator.

Garlin Gilchrist is married and has twins with his wife, Ellen. Outwardly, he stands out due to his above-average height of 202 cm.
