James H. MacDonald

James Hugh MacDonald (born March 15, 1832 in Inverness , Scotland , †  January 19, 1889 in Elmwood , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1889 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Michigan.

Career

In 1848 James MacDonald came to the United States from his Scottish homeland, where he initially worked as a delivery man in a small town in Pennsylvania . Later he worked as a railroad worker for a few years. He moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio in 1854 and to Wisconsin three years later . Between 1859 and 1863 he was a foreman building the railway in Cuba . Then he came to Michigan, where he worked for the Chicago and North Western Railway . From 1876 he was also active in mining.

Politically, MacDonald joined the Republican Party . In 1886 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Michigan alongside Cyrus G. Luce . He held this office after a re-election between 1887 and his death on January 19, 1889. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . James MacDonald died in a railroad accident near Elmwood. He was succeeded as Lieutenant Governor by President Pro Tempore of the State Senate, William Ball .
