Brian Nelson Calley (born March 25, 1977 in Dearborn , Michigan ) is an American politician . From 2011 to 2019 he was Lieutenant Governor of the State of Michigan.

Career

Brian Calley graduated from Ionia High School in 1994 . He then studied at Michigan State University until 1998 and then at Grand Valley State University until 2000 . Then he started working in the banking industry, where he made it to the position of Vice President of Irwin Union Bank . Politically, he joined the Republican Party . He was elected twice to the District Council of Ionia County . In this district he was also the Republican party leader. Between 2006 and 2010 he was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives .

In 2010, Calley was elected Lieutenant Governor of Michigan, alongside Rick Snyder . He has held this office since January 1, 2011. He is Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He is also a member of numerous associations and organizations. In 2014, both the governor and his deputy were confirmed in office.

His daughter is autistic . That brought Calley closer to the subject. Since then he has campaigned for the needs of those affected by this developmental disorder.

In the run-up to the 2018 gubernatorial election , Calley's attempt to be nominated as a Republican candidate and thus succeeded Snyder, who had been excluded from any further application, failed in office. In the internal party primary he was defeated by Bill Schuette , the previous Attorney General of Michigan. This was later defeated by the Democrat Gretchen Whitmer , whose running mate Garlin Gilchrist replaced Calley in office on January 1, 2019.
