Andrew Parsons
Andrew Parsons (born July 22, 1817 in Hoosick , Rensselaer County , New York , † June 16, 1855 in Corunna , Michigan ) was an American politician and from 1853 to 1855 the 10th governor of the state of Michigan.
Early years and political advancement
Andrew Parsons attended local schools in his home in New York State. In 1835 he moved to Michigan, where he worked as a shop clerk and school teacher. Soon he also became a land registrar ( Register of Deeds ).
Parsons was a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Michigan Senate between 1847 and 1848 . Then he served on the board of directors of the University of Michigan from 1852 to 1853 before being elected lieutenant governor of Michigan as his party's candidate .
Lieutenant Governor and Governor
After the resignation of acting governor Robert McClelland , who had been appointed US Secretary of the Interior, on March 7, 1853 , Parsons had to end the remaining term of office until January 3, 1855 as his deputy. Michigan reformed its tax legislation in just under two years. In addition, both Michigan and the United States as a whole were undergoing political change. With the establishment of the Republican Party and the dissolution of the Whigs , the party landscape changed. This also happened against the background of the worsening conflict between northern and southern states. The Democrats, for their part, were internally torn over the question of slavery . For the gubernatorial elections of 1855 they refused Parsons the new nomination, so that he had to resign from office in January 1855.
End of life
But Parsons managed to get elected to the Michigan House of Representatives . There he moved in as a member of parliament in early 1855. But he could not enjoy his mandate for long. An illness soon forced him to resign. He retired to his farm near Corunna, where he died on June 16, 1855. Andrew Parsons was married to Marietta Clason, with whom he had four children.
