Rensselaer County is a county in the state of New York in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 152,538 people and a population density of 90 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Troy .
history
The county was formed from Albany County on February 7, 1791 . It was named after the Dutch diamond dealer Kiliaen van Rensselaer (1585-1643), who acquired a large estate (Rensselaerswijck) in the area of today's Rensselaer County and today's Albany County in the colony of New Netherlands .
Five locations have National Historic Landmark status . 103 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 20, 2018).

The county has an area of 1723 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water. Rensselaer County is bordered to the north by Washington County , to the south by Columbia County , to the west by Albany Counties and Saratoga Counties, and to the east by the states of Massachusetts and Vermont . The highest point in the county, the 859 meter high Berlin Mountain, is located in the municipality of Berlin . On the banks of the Hudson River , the lowest point in the county is about 6 meters above sea level .
