Walter A. Wood Mowing and Reaping Machine Co.

Blacksmith Walter A. Wood began making a mower in Hoosick Falls in 1852, and his A. Wood Mowing & Reaping Company grew to become the world's largest producer of agricultural machinery in the 1890s . The area of the manufacturing plant on the west bank of the river had an area of 34  hectares . However, the Wood Company had to close in 1924, mainly as a result of the self-propelled farm equipment introduced by John Deere . Most of the factory facilities were in use by Colasta Corporation until the late 1950s. This company manufactured parts for radios . Later parts of the site were used by a trade in lumber and tools. The entire complex was completely destroyed by a series of arson attacks in the mid and late 1970s . The only buildings still in use today were outside the main complex, such as the former foundry and the original office building.

During the period when the Walter Wood production company was booming, so did the town of Hoosick Falls. A number of other companies settled in the village and brought new residents with them. Hoosick Falls used to manufacture paper, auto parts, glass, and soda and beer bottling lines . During this period a number of Victorian-style houses were built , some of which have stood the test of time. Hoosick Falls was also a hub of trade. Local farmers loaded their produce onto railroad cars to be shipped to New York City and other cities.
