The Hoosic River (also called Hoosac River and Hoosick or Hoosuck River ) is a left tributary of the Hudson River in the northeastern United States in the states of Massachusetts , Vermont and New York .

River course

The source is the Cheshire Reservoir in the Hoosac Range . Then it flows through the places Cheshire , Adams , North Adams and Williamstown . At North Adams, the North Branch Hoosic River meets the river from the right. In Pownal the river flows through Vermont for a short time before passing the Hoosick Falls in New York at Hoosick Falls . The Buskirk Covered Bridge spans the Hoosic River a few kilometers downstream . The river passes the place Johnsonville , where it is dammed and shortly thereafter flows through the Town of Schaghticoke before flowing into the Hudson River 23 km north of Troy .

history

The Dutch arrived in the area at the beginning of the 17th century, followed by the British in 1745 and later by the French. The British built Fort Massachusetts (now North Adams) on the river to reinforce their territorial claims. After several battles, the area came under British control in 1760.

In August 1777 the British were defeated in the Battle of Bennington on the lower reaches of the river in the American Revolutionary War . After that, the region became more populated and mills and factories were built on the river.
