North Adams is a city in Berkshire County in the US state of Massachusetts . North Adams is part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. With 13,708 inhabitants, it is one of the smallest cities in the state. North Adams is known as the home of the largest museum of contemporary art in the entire United States, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA).

North Adams is in the Hoosic River valley and was founded in 1745 during King George's War . North Adams is independent from Adams , but both are named after Samuel Adams .

North Adams was an industrial city for a long time. The Arnold textile company had to close during the Great Depression , and the other major employer, the Sprague Electric Company, ceased operations in 1985.

In 1894 the North Adams Normal School was founded, now the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) with more than 2000 students.
