Martin Melcher
Martin M. Melcher (born August 1, 1915 in North Adams , Massachusetts , † April 20, 1968 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film producer . All but one of his films starred his wife, actress and singer Doris Day .
Life
Martin Melcher began his career as an agent and manager for The Andrews Sisters group and married Patty Andrews on October 19, 1947. They divorced on March 30, 1950. Barely a year later, he married Doris Day and together with her they founded their own film production company in 1952. He adopted Day's son Terry Melcher from his first marriage, who was a successful record producer in the 1960s.
In 1962 Melcher produced the play The Perfect Setup for Broadway , in which Gene Barry , Angie Dickinson and Jan Sterling played and which was discontinued after five performances.
Melcher died of a ruptured appendix . According to Doris Day's 1975 autobiography, she informed Melcher's doctor that Melcher had an enlarged heart. Melcher was a member of the Christian Science Church and only decided to see a doctor when his condition worsened.
Shortly after his death, Day learned that Melcher had contracted a sitcom , The Doris Day Show , with the CBS without her knowledge , and that not only had she lost the millions she had made during their marriage to poor investments, but also left a mountain of debt. Day sued his business partner, Jerome B. Rosenthal, and after a 99-day trial, she was awarded $ 23 million for fraud and poor performance by the accused. Rosenthal declared bankruptcy , and in August 1977, Day reached an agreement with his insurance company on an amount of $ 6 million, paid in 23 annual installments.
