Murder in the Clouds (Original title: Julie ) is an American thriller directed by Andrew L. Stone from 1956 with Doris Day and Louis Jourdan in the lead roles.

action

After an argument, former stewardess Julie drives with her husband Lyle Benton on a country road. Julie accuses Lyle of his pathological jealousy. Lyle steps on the accelerator, forcing Julie on a daring ride that almost ends in disaster. The next day, she speaks to an old friend, Cliff Henderson, about the incident. According to the police report, her first husband Bob once took his own life out of desperation. However, Cliff believes Bob was murdered and has Julie's second husband Lyle under suspicion. He had already had an eye on Julie many years ago and is more and more prone to uncontrolled jealousy attacks. When Julie questions Lyle about the circumstances that may have led to Bob's death, Lyle openly admits she killed Bob. Now he threatens Julie and warns her not to leave him.

The next morning Julie manages to escape from the common house in Monterey . She immediately went to the local police station to report Lyle's confession to officers. Once there, she also meets Cliff. Since Julie cannot produce any evidence of Lyle's murder of Bob, the police refuse to reopen the case. When Lyle also arrives on the scene, he denies having Bob on his conscience and also claims that Julie and Cliff are having an affair. Thereupon Cliff drives Julie to San Francisco , where he accommodates her in a hotel under an assumed name. Lyle is still able to find her, so that Julie, fearing for her life, finally moves to New York , from where she works as a flight attendant again.

After a few months of adjusting to her new life, Julie plans to meet with Cliff on a layover in San Francisco. As Cliff makes his way to the agreed meeting point, he is followed by Lyle and forced with a gun to drive him to Julie. As they drive together, Cliff jumps out of the car, with Lyle wounding him with a shot from his gun. Lyle finds Julie's address in Cliff's jacket and drives on. Cliff manages to save himself to a house with the last of his strength and calls the police. In the meantime, Julie receives an order from her employer to accompany an Amalgamated Air Lines flight that same night . As she takes a taxi to the airport, Lyle follows her, who goes unnoticed on board her plane.

When the plane is already in the air, the police officers contact the pilot who is supposed to hold the plane in California airspace. Julie is also supposed to find out if Lyle is on the plane. When she spots him in a row of seats, she goes back to the cockpit. Lyle is faster, however, grabs her and takes her to the cockpit, where he shoots the pilot. The copilot draws his own pistol and shoots just as Lyle fires a shot at him. Lyle collapses as a result, and the copilot threatens to lose consciousness. The exchange of fire causes the passengers to panic and Julie is forced to maneuver the plane alone under the instructions of the wounded copilot. Julie is instructed to land over the radio from the airport control tower. But only on her second attempt does she land safely.
