John Augustus "Jack" Kelly, Jr. (born September 16, 1927 in New York , † November 7, 1992 in Huntington Beach , California ) was an American actor and politician . From 1957 to 1962 he appeared in 83 episodes of the popular television series Maverick .

Early years and careers

Jack Kelly was born one of four children to Ann Mary "Nancy" and John Augustus Kelly, Sr. His sister is the well-known actress Nancy Kelly .

Kelly played his first film role in 1939 in The Love and Life of Telephone Maker A. Bell , but was not named in the credits. It was followed by a few supporting roles in movies of the 1950s. ( Alert in space , murder in the clouds )

However, he only gained international fame with his role in the popular television series Maverick (1957–1962). There he played Bart Maverick , the older brother of Bret Maverick ( James Garner ), and the cousin of Beau Maverick ( Roger Moore ). James Garner was originally intended to be the sole leading actor in the series, but the producers realized that their quota of episodes was impossible because they needed a week for each episode. Hence, Jack Kelly was introduced as the older brother, even though Kelly was actually only seven months older than Garner.

The Garner and Kelly episodes were filmed simultaneously by different production teams. Sometimes both Mavericks appear in the same episode. After Garner left after the third season, he stepped up and took over the sole leading role in the fifth and final season. In total, he appeared in 83 of the 124 episodes.

After the series ended, Kelly was often seen in episode roles in television series.

In the early 1970s, he moved to Huntington Beach, where he was mayor from 1983 to 1986 .
