James Garner
James Garner (born April 7, 1928 as James Scott Bumgarner in Norman , Oklahoma , † July 19, 2014 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor . The lead actor in such popular TV series as Maverick and Detective Rockford - Call Suffice has played in over 50 films over the course of his long career, including Broken Chains (1963), Victor / Victoria (1982), Space Cowboys (2000) and Like a Single Day (2004).
Life
James Garner was the youngest of Weldon Warren Bumgarner's three sons and his wife. At the age of four he became a half-orphan through the death of his mother; after that he lived with his brothers at first with their grandmother. After the father married his second wife Wilma, the children returned to him. James hated his stepmother. At the age of 14 there was a fight with her in the course of which he beat her. Weldon and Wilma then ended their marriage and Garner moved to Los Angeles with his father and brothers .
He dropped out of high school at the age of 16, joined the Merchant Navy and participated in the Korean War in which he was wounded. After his return he began to study business administration, but then switched to an acting course at the Berghof School in New York . He got by with odd jobs until he got an appearance on a Broadway production in 1954 . That year he appeared in Edward Dmytryk's film adaptation of Herman Wouk's play The Caine Was Fate for the first time as an extra . He then took on minor roles in film and television.
With the Western - series Maverick (1957-1960) to a wider audience, he was known. In the cinema he has appeared in westerns, crime novels, comedies and war films, often in leading roles and alongside world stars. He achieved his greatest popularity through the title role of the television series Detective Rockford - a call is enough in the period 1974 to 1980. In the 1990s, Rockford episodes were made in feature film format, which quoted the style of the 1970s episodes. Through his personification as "Detective Rockford" Garner became something of a cult figure .
He owned his own production company that financed some of his film projects and was fascinated by auto racing. Thanks to his own racing experience, he was ideally qualified to portray a racing driver in Grand Prix (1966). After this film he was co-owner of the racing team "American International Racers" (AIR) for two years and worked on the documentary The Racing Scene (1970). In the Indianapolis 500 of 1975, 1977 and 1985, Garner drove the pace car .
In 1956 he married Lois Clarke, who brought their daughter Kimberley into the marriage. The couple recently lived most of the time away from Hollywood on Garner's ranch near Santa Barbara . His biological daughter Greta ("Gigi") was a successful singer in Great Britain in the 1980s.
James Garner was awarded the Purple Heart twice for his wounds during the Korean War .
During the filming of Rockford he developed knee problems, during which time he was operated on several times. He has had to undergo several heart bypass surgeries over the years . At the beginning of May 2008 he suffered a slight stroke , after which he only appeared as a speaker in various film projects.
James Garner died of a heart attack on July 19, 2014 .
In Germany he has been dubbed by actor Claus Biederstaedt since Detective Rockford - a call is usually enough . Often, however, Holger Hagen also lent him his voice.
