Even a sheriff needs help from time to time (Original title: Support Your Local Sheriff!) Is an American western comedy from 1969.
action
Jason McCullough says he is on his way to Australia when he learns of gold discoveries near the fictional gold rush town of Calendar in Colorado . He thinks the prospect for gold is a good way to finance his further trip. When he arrives at Calendar, he watches an unfair duel. The survivor is Joe Danby, who belongs to the simple-minded but notorious Danby clan, who collect taxes from the mine owners and are habitually allowed to do almost anything in the region. Jason points out to Joe that he has just committed a murder before he goes his way again.
Shortly afterwards, he was talking to the other guests over dinner and asked how a man who is not afraid of work could earn a little money in the area, since he would be "broke this afternoon at the latest with the local price trend" will. The sheriff's position is advertised on the local notice board . Jason applies for the position with Mayor Olly Perkins, mine owner and general store owner. After he has proven his shooting skills and has been assured that he can dig for gold on the side, he gets the job from the mayor and the city council who happens to be present, which includes 150 dollars a month free board and lodging in the mayor's house.
His first official act is the mediation of a brawl in which he recruits the city-famous jerk Jake as deputy sheriff. With his help he also arrests Joe Danby, whom he initially uses a trick to prevent from escaping from prison - because it has no bars yet.
The other Danbys are very upset and their leader, "Papi" Danby, tries in his own way to get Joe out of prison. But he quickly realizes that the new sheriff is of a different caliber than his predecessors.
Meanwhile, Jason uses unconventional methods to keep the city tidy, digs for gold and lets Prudence, known as Prudy, the mayor's daughter, take care of him, slowly getting closer. Since killers hired by the Danbys fail again and again and neither escape nor escape attempts lead to the desired success, Papi Danby finally mobilizes all family members. But Sheriff Jason knows how to fend off this attack with the support of his deputy Jake and Prudy. In fact, Jason marries the beautiful and wealthy Prudy and stays in town for the time being - not without keeping open the option of later on to Australia with a wink. Jake is his successor as sheriff.
background
- To get McCullough to stay, the mayor emphasizes the modern and sophisticated character of the city and his house. He even bought a harmonium for his daughter and he claims: "It comes from afar, from Düsseldorf ." In fact, the German piano manufacturer Rud was. Ibach Sohn , with a sales point in Düsseldorf, was present at the world exhibitions in Philadelphia in 1876 and in St. Louis in 1904 .
- In 1970, a western comedy of the same style was followed up with Latigo .

- Adolf Heinzlmeier and Berndt Schulz in the lexicon "Films on TV" : "The funny, briskly played western, which is cast down to the supporting roles, cheekily targets the genre." (Rating: 2½ stars = above average)
- Münchner Merkur : "Parodies the Western genre in a very enjoyable way."
- Evangelical film observer : "The way of not taking wild west customs very seriously is sometimes quite entertaining."
