Burt Kennedy

Burton Raphael Kennedy (born September 3, 1922 in Muskegon , Michigan , † February 15, 2001 in Sherman Oaks , California ) was an American screenwriter and director .

Life

Kennedy served in the 1st Cavalry Division in the retaking of the Philippines in World War II . He received the Order of Silver Star , the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart . After that, Kennedy began writing for the radio. Then he used his training as a cavalry officer to secure a job as a fencing trainer. He also began doubling fencing stunts in films.

John Wayne commissioned him to write his first film script. The western The Seventh Is Turned was directed by Budd Boetticher with Randolph Scott in the lead role. He then wrote Gun the Man Down and Man in the Vault, two more scripts for Wayne's production company, which were also Andrew V. McLaglen's first two directorial works . Three more scripts followed in the fruitful collaboration with Boetticher, before Kennedy switched to directing in 1961 and worked in more than 40 film and television productions.

Kennedy was buried in the Arlington National Cemetery of Honor .
