The return of the magnificent seven (Original title: Return of the Seven ) is an American film by Burt Kennedy from 1966. This western is the sequel to the film The Magnificent Seven from 1960.
action
A group of bandits kidnaps all men from several Mexican farming villages in order to make them work as slaves for the villain Francisco Lorca. One of the kidnapped farmers is Chico, who years ago fought bandits with six other men. The peasant women are left alone in the villages. Chico's wife Petra sets out to find her husband's former companions. She finally finds the leader Chris and his best friend Vin, the others are dead. Chris recruits four new helpers and takes up the pursuit of the bandits in order to free the men again, which succeeds. But then the seven gunslingers and the numerous farmers are surrounded and a bloody argument ensues. Three of the seven gunslingers die, but Lorca is ultimately defeated.
background
Yul Brynner plays the gunslinger Chris in the lead role in this film, shot in Spain . Originally Steve McQueen was supposed to repeat his role as Vin from the first part, but Brynner intervened. In the end, Robert Fuller took over the role of Vin. The films Guns of the Magnificent Seven ( Guns of the Magnificent Seven , 1969) and The Death Ride of the Magnificent Seven ( The Magnificent Seven Ride! , 1972) are more followers of The Magnificent Seven but could not repeat the success of the original.
criticism
Phil Hardy thinks the film is "far better than most sequels". The script is intelligent, the production by Kennedy efficient. The return of the magnificent seven is far more violent than the original and thus marks the change in the genre to the stylized violence of the Spaghetti Western . Joe Hembus calls the film “a catastrophe”, the dialogues consist “almost entirely of platitudes”, the plot “of sheer question marks”. The Protestant film observer accuses the work of preaching “penetrating perseverance”, but sums it up that it is an “effectively staged widescreen color western”.
Awards
Elmer Bernstein received an Oscar nomination in the category Best Film Music in 1967 .
