Revenge of the Magnificent Seven from 1969 is the sequel to the western classic The Return of the Magnificent Seven from 1966.
action
Again the main character is the gunslinger Chris Adams. In Mexico, an unspecified "president" rules the peasants with brutal soldiers. Quintero, a revolutionary leader, is arrested by Colonel Diego, a particularly violent officer. Quintero's confidante Maximiliano escapes and, on Quintero's advice, looks for Chris Adams. He can negotiate $ 600 from the incompetent Mexican gang leader Lobero to hire Adams. Adams puts together a group of seven heroes with him and other old friends.
They set out to free Quintero. On the way, a homeless boy named Emiliano Zapata joins the group he sees as a role model. After Adams realizes the uselessness of the gang leader Lobero, his group raids a prisoner transport and recruits some support. The fort and prison in which Quintero is incarcerated are attacked together. Before Adams can eliminate his opponent Diego, however, four of his companions die. Shortly before the end of the battle, the Mexican gang that mutinied against their boss Lobero intervened to help. In the end, Adams and Levi say goodbye to Maximiliano and Quintero, who will continue the guerrilla war. They ride away - and leave their wages behind.
Predecessors and sequels
The film The Magnificent Seven (1960) had three sequels set in the Wild West, which could not repeat the success of the first part. Revenge of the Magnificent Seven was the third film in the series and the sequel to The Return of the Magnificent Seven (1966). The fourth and final film, The Death Ride of the Magnificent Seven , was made in 1972 with Lee Van Cleef in the role of Chris.
Reviews
For the lexicon of international films , The Vengeance of the Magnificent Seven is a sharp drop in quality compared to its predecessors. He only processed clichés and offered "conventional Western entertainment".
Howard Thompson of the New York Times praised the photography of the film, which was shot exclusively in Spain , but found the actors wasted in a routine exercise.
The evangelical film observer succinctly remarks that it is a matter of an “inconsequential infusion of an infusion” and comes to the conclusion that the strip is “boring and superfluous”.
