Randolph Scott

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

George Randolph Crane Scott (born January 23, 1898 in Orange County , Virginia , † March 2, 1987 in Beverly Hills , California ) was an American film actor . His career spanned from the end of silent film in the late 1920s to the early 1960s. Scott achieved his high popularity during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s with films such as Gold Smuggling to Virginia , The Buccaneer , Ticket to the Afterlife , To Head and Collar or Sacramento .

life and career

Scott made his first appearances on camera in the late 1920s. His prominent position as a western actor was satirized by Mel Brooks in his 1974 film The wild wild west - which, however, underlines his extraordinary importance for the genre of the idealistic-heroic American western.

In 1936 he married Marion DuPont of the billionaire DuPont family . This marriage was divorced three years later. In 1944 he married Patricia Stillman. The marriage lasted until his death. Both had two adopted children.

Randolph Scott died in Beverly Hills in 1987 at the age of 89 and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte, North Carolina.

He always maintained the image of the clean man. Even so, there was a rumor that he was in a homosexual relationship with his fellow actor Cary Grant , because the two shared a house for around ten years. This early shared apartment was justified by the pronounced frugality of both, who at that time were already big stars and thus big earners. This cohabitation ended in 1942 when Cary Grant married the Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton , then the richest woman in the world. Randolph Scott himself also became a wealthy man as he invested his film royalties with foresight and started his own production company. He is also said to have successfully speculated on the stock market and was considered the richest Hollywood actor at the time of his consistent withdrawal from the public.
