Orange County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000, the county had 25,881 residents and a population density of 29 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Orange .

Orange County is located in north-central Virginia and covers an area of ​​889 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Culpeper County , Spotsylvania County , Louisa County , Albemarle County , Greene County, and Madison County .

history

It was formed in 1734 from parts of Spotsylvania County. It was named after Prince Wilhelm IV of Orange. During the American Civil War , the Battle of the Wilderness took place here on May 5th and 6th, 1864.

President James Madison grew up in Orange County and spent his retirement years there. President Zachary Taylor was born here. Also came the film actor and film producer Randolph Scott from Orange County.

As of the 2000 census , Orange County had 25,881 people in 10,150 households and 7,470 families. The population density was 29 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.36 percent white, 13.78 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.90 percent were descended from two or more races.
