Orange County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000, the county had 25,881 residents and a population density of 29 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Orange .

Orange County is located in north-central Virginia and covers an area of 889 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Culpeper County , Spotsylvania County , Louisa County , Albemarle County , Greene County, and Madison County .
history
It was formed in 1734 from parts of Spotsylvania County. It was named after Prince Wilhelm IV of Orange. During the American Civil War , the Battle of the Wilderness took place here on May 5th and 6th, 1864.
President James Madison grew up in Orange County and spent his retirement years there. President Zachary Taylor was born here. Also came the film actor and film producer Randolph Scott from Orange County.

As of the 2000 census , Orange County had 25,881 people in 10,150 households and 7,470 families. The population density was 29 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.36 percent white, 13.78 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.90 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.28 percent of the population.
Of the 10,150 households, 29.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.7 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers, 26.4 percent were non-families, 22.1 percent were single households, and 10.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.90.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 91.7 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 42,889 , and the median income for a family is $ 48,197. Males had a median income of $ 31,982 versus $ 24,209 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,107. 7.1 percent of families and 9.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line. 11.6 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 10.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
