geography
Halifax County is located in the extreme south of Virginia, bordering North Carolina and has an area of 2,149 square kilometers, of which 27 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Charlotte County , Mecklenburg County , Pittsylvania County, and Campbell County .
The Roanoke River forms the border to Counties Campbell and Charlotte . The eastern border to Mecklenburg County also follows flowing waters ( Aarons Creek , Dan River and Roanoke River), which led to a special feature. Dan and Roanoke River originally ran parallel in a valley to the southeast before the two rivers joined near the town of Clarksville . After the valley was flooded by the John H. Kerr Reservoir in 1952 , this boundary remained unchanged. Therefore, Halifax County now has a strip around twelve kilometers long but only a few hundred meters wide in the upper Kerr Reservoir, while the nearby lake shores belong to Mecklenburg County.
history
It was formed in 1752 from parts of Lunenburg County. It was named after George Montague Dunk , Earl of Halifax.
