Halifax is a city in Halifax County , Virginia , United States . It is located on the Banister River tributary of the Dan River and is the county seat of Halifax County.

Halifax is located in the middle of Halifax County. Its northern limit is the Banister River, which is a left tributary of the Dan River.
history
The city of Halifax was founded in 1752. Since 1777 it has been the seat of Halifax County. The court town was initially named after the nearby river Banister. Over time, the city grew around the new courthouse. It was called Banister Town during the American Civil War and renamed Houston in 1890 to make the city attractive for a new railroad line . After the First World War , the name was changed to today's Halifax .
