Charlotte County is a county in the US state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 12,475 people and a population density of 10 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Charlotte Court House . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Charlotte County is located in southern Virginia, with its southern tip about 20 km from North Carolina and has an area of ​​1,237 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Prince Edward County , Lunenburg County , Mecklenburg County , Halifax County , Campbell County, and Appomattox County .

It was formed in 1765 from parts of Lunenburg County. It was named after Sophie Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz , the wife of Georg III. , King of Great Britain.

According to the 2000 United States Census , Charlotte County had 12,472 people in 4,951 households and 3,435 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.51 percent white, 32.89 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian and 0.70 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.59 percent were descended from two or more races.
