The county seat is Charlotte Court House . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Charlotte County is located in southern Virginia, with its southern tip about 20 km from North Carolina and has an area of ​​1,237 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It was formed in 1765 from parts of Lunenburg County. It was named after Sophie Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz , the wife of Georg III. , King of Great Britain.
