Grayson County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 17,917 people and a population density of 16 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Independence . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Grayson County is located in southwest Virginia, borders North Carolina and Tennessee to the south and has an area of 1,155 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Smyth County , Wythe County , Carroll County, and Washington Counties .
history
It was formed in 1793 from parts of Wythe County and Patrick County. It was named after the US Senator and member of the Continental Congress William Grayson .

According to the 2000 census , Grayson County had 17,917 people in 7,259 households and 5,088 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.70 percent white, 6.79 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.70 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.60 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.55 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,259 households, 26.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.6 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers, 29.9 percent were non-families, 26.8 percent were single households and 12.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.77 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 19.5 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 107.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 109.7 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,676 , and the median income for a family was $ 35,076. Males had a median income of $ 24,126 versus $ 17,856 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,768. 10.0 percent of families and 13.6 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 18.8 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 16.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
