Greene County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000, the county had 15,244 residents and a population density of 38 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Stanardsville . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Greene County is located in northern central Virginia and covers an area of 407 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Madison County , Orange County , Albemarle County , Rockingham County, and Page Counties .
history
It was formed in 1838 from parts of Orange County. It was named after Nathanael Greene , a hero in the American Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Greene County had 15,244 people in 5,574 households and 4,291 families. The population density was 38 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.99 percent white, 6.45 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.45 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.64 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.25 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.32 percent of the population.
Of the 5,574 households, 38.3 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 61.9 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers, 23.0 percent were non-families, 18.0 percent were single households and 5.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.07.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 33.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 9.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 94.7 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 45,931 , and the median income for a family is $ 48,548. Males had a median income of $ 32,020 versus $ 26,864 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,478. 4.8 percent of families and 6.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. 7.7 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 7.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
