Manassas is an Independent City in the US state of Virginia with 37,821 residents. Like the neighboring city of Manassas Park , it does not belong to any county, but both are surrounded by Prince William County . Manassas is also the administrative seat of Prince William County. This is not part of the city, but forms an approximately 15 hectare enclave in the center of Manassas.

history

Two major battles took place near the city during the Civil War , known in the southern states as the First and Second Battle of Manassas. In the northern states , the battles are known as the First and Second Battles on Bull Run , named after a small watercourse nearby.

Trivia

The American rock musician Stephen Stills named his backing band , which he founded in 1971, after this city when he and his fellow musicians had themselves photographed for a photo at the old train station in Manassas. The photo is also the cover image of their album of the same name .
