Joseph Henry Lonas

Joseph Henry Lonas (born January 4, 1925 in Manassas in Virginia , USA ; † August 2, 2011 in Berlin ) was an American sculptor and painter . He was a university professor in Berlin.

life and work

Joseph Henry Lonas began his artistic training at the age of 14 at the Corcoran School of Arts in Washington, DC From 1943, he served in the US military and received a Bachelor of Arts from the College of William & Mary in 1949 . In 1950 he went back to the military. In 1953 he joined the University of Iowa 's Master of Fine Arts from.

In 1953 he was a scholarship holder of the Fulbright Academy in Berlin and in 1958 he was a master student of the University of Fine Arts Berlin, 1961 participant in the first German sculptor symposium in 1961, the sculptor symposium Kaisersteinbruch , a symposium of European sculptors in Gaubüttelbrunn near Kirchheim . In 1963 he was appointed professor at the Berlin School of Fine Arts. In 1985 Lonas took part in the II. International Glass Symposium in Nový Bor in what was then Czechoslovakia .

Sculptures, paintings and drawings by Lonas are on display in a permanent exhibition at the Muscarelle Museum , College of William & Mary in Williamsburg . There were numerous solo exhibitions by him in Berlin and others in The Hague , Williamsburg and Backnang .

As a full member of the German Association of Artists , Joseph Henry Lonas took part in numerous large annual DKB exhibitions between 1964 and 1978.
