history

The history of Gaubüttelbrunn is closely linked to that of Kirchheim. The so-called Germanic Sea was at the site of the place 200 million years ago. Today the rich shell limestone quarries still bear witness to this past. Human settlement took place 5000 years ago. In the 20th century excavations were carried out and a stone box grave was found. During the Latène period , today's town center was already settled.

However, today's village emerged later. "Butelbrunn" was mentioned for the first time in a document dated October 14, 986. At that time, the Würzburg bishop Hugo gave the St. Burkard monastery in Würzburg some income in the village. The place quickly rose to become a church village, a church probably existed as early as the 14th century. The place name was not given the prefix Gau until the 19th century to distinguish the village from Waldbüttelbrunn .

In 1961, the first international sculpture symposium in the Federal Republic of Germany took place in the district of Gaubüttelbrunn, at the so-called Kaisersteinbruch . The works of art created back then can still be found on the site of the former quarry today. Gaubüttelbrunn lost its independence as a municipality in the course of the municipal reform in Bavaria and joined the municipality of Kirchheim on May 1, 1978.

Attractions

Sculpture by Ludwig Sonnleitner in the cemetery

The center of the village is the Catholic parish church of St. Stephan and Anna. The Gothic building was built in the course of the Counter-Reformation by Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn and equipped with the typical pointed helmet. In 1761 the nave was redesigned. Additional extensions were completed in the 20th century. Inside, the church was furnished with altars by the Auber artist Johann Wolfgang von der Auwera .

The town hall of the former municipality was built in the 18th century and ends with a hipped roof . A large courtyard is located in the center of the village. It was built in 1797. Many wayside shrines and small memorials have been preserved in the vicinity of the village , which bear witness to the popular piety of past centuries. Most of these objects date from the 18th century, but one example has survived from the 17th century.

Religious art was also cultivated in Gaubüttelbrunn in the 20th century. In the 1940s, the artists Ludwig Sonnleitner , Julius Bausenwein and Adolf Herbst created several tombs for the community's cemetery. Sonnleitner often worked in Gaubüttelbrunn in the post-war period, including erecting a war memorial. Other sculptures from the international symposium have been preserved from 1961. Among other things, worked Karl Prantl , Joachim Fritz-Schultze-Bansen , Menashe Kadishman and Janez Lenassi here.
