Adolf Herbst
Adolf Herbst (born August 16, 1909 in Emmen , † August 25, 1983 in Zurich ) was a Swiss painter .
Life
Adolf Herbst was born in Emmen LU in 1909 as the son of a carpenter. After an apprenticeship as a draftsman, Herbst studied at the architecture department of the ETH Zurich. In 1935 he turned to painting.
In 1936 he took over the studio in Paris from Fritz Glarner . In 1938, 1939 and 1942 Adolf Herbst was awarded the federal federal scholarships. In 1947 he met René Auberjonois and Georges Rouault . In 1948 he set up shop in Zurich and moved into his studio on Neumarkt. From 1951 he was friends with Varlin , who also portrayed him. In 1974 he was awarded the Art and Culture Prize of the City of Lucerne . In 1983 Adolf Herbst died in Zurich.
According to his biographer Hans Robert Hahnloser, Adolf Herbst is considered one of the most important Swiss painters of the representational direction in the 1940s to 1970s. Accordingly, he created valid works primarily in the area of nudes , still life and portraiture . According to Hahnloser, they are stylistically reminiscent of works by the Nabis . Adolf Herbst's work is represented in numerous museums and private collections.
